Baccarat is a game that originates from Europe and has been played ever since the fifteenth century. Even though it has existed for such a long time, it is not as well known as other card games like Blackjack or Poker. This is all the more reason to try it out, be it to just learn something new, or to learn something special that not everybody knows.
The most unique feature of Baccarat, as opposed to most other card games, is that the bets are made before the player has seen the cards. There are three ways to bet in this game; on the player, on the house, or on a tie. This, as well, is unusual since almost no other game allows the player to bet on the house. The objective of the game is to receive a number as close to nine as possible. The value of the cards is as follows: Aces count as 1, cards 2 to nine count as their assigned value, 10 to king count as 0. It is not possible to have a hand higher than 9, if a player receives a hand that is higher than 9, ten points will be subtracted from it. A 6 and a 7 will not be 13 but 3, a 5 and a 9 will be 4 and not 14. The same rules go for the house, of course.
The house and the player are dealt each two cards in the beginning of a game of Baccarat. However, as opposed to Blackjack, there are rules on who will receive another card; it is not the player’s personal decision. If the two cards add up to 9 or 8 the hand is called a “natural” hand and no more cards will be dealt. The same thing happens if both the house and the player have the same amount of points, then a tie is called. If the hand is neither “natural” nor a tie, cards will be dealt according to specific Baccarat rules. If the player’s hand is 6 or greater, he or she must stand (won’t get another card). In the case of the player’s hand being 5 or less another card will be issued. The house’s hand must be 7 or greater in order to stand and 0, 1, or 2 in order to receive another card. If the house’s hand totals 3 and the player’s third card (the player always receives his card before the house) is anything other than an 8, the house must take another card. If the house’s hand totals 4 and the player’s third card is anything other than a 1, 8, 9, 0, the house has to take another card as well. If the house’s hand totals 5 and the player’s third card is a 4, 5, 6, or 7 the house receives another card. Finally, if the house’s hand totals 6 and the player’s third card is a 6 or 7 the house is issued a card. Even though these rules might sound a little confusing at first, it is really not that complicated, because the rules are programmed in an online environment.
The payout is 1:1 for betting on the player or on the house and 8:1 for betting on a tie, since the odds to achieve a tie are much smaller. Like most other casino games Baccarat is mostly based on chance, but there is always a margin for success through smart strategies. The option to play this game at an online casino has many advantages since the rules are somewhat complicated. In the comfort of the home a player has the ability to learn the intricacies of this game slowly without being pressured by a casino dealer or watched by various other casino guests. This way, everyone can take as much time as they need to develop into a top level Baccarat player.
